When ‘g’ came on board, there was a limited budget and a desire to get the whole family involved – from grandfather on down with cabinet installation and a distinct desire to make efficient use of the materials – particularly the Icestone® counter top slab.
A look at before and after show how opening up the space and utilizing under-used space nearby helped the family gain storage and an easier work flow. Their all-wood cabinets from ‘g’ and recycled glass and concrete countertops kept the woodsy feel of the home. This was echoed as well in the adjacent living room with hickory flooring that matched the new cabinetry. The engineered flooring was installed on top of a Warmboard® radiant heating system for an energy efficient approach to comfort on cold New England days.

Project Summary
Goals: More user-friendly spaces, open up kitchen/dining area, use sustainable building materials, maintain "woodsy" feel to Cape home, comfort
Materials used: Icestone countertop in Forest Fern, FSC Certified engineered hickory floating floor, solid hickory cabinetry (free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and warmboard radiant heating subfloor
The kitchen looks beautiful, the homeowners were supported every step of the way in decision-making and product research and knowledge, and are happy not only with the aesthetics, but the functionality - every space was designed for their family's needs - and energy savings (from the radiant heat system!). Of course they were also happy to have use of their kitchen sink, once again. Below are some photos showcasing the remodel (click the pictures to see them enlarged):

Clever use of space underneath the existing tall and low windows allows for extra storage and easy access for the kids to cereals and fruit in the morning before their parents get up.
