Creating the Green Home - The Home as Body: A Workshop in Review.

We were so excited to be joined by architect Bill Boehm last Saturday for the second in our series of Winter/Spring Homeowner and Small Business Remodeling Workshops.  "Creating the Green Home: the Home as Body" was an incredible learning opportunity.  An experienced architect and designer of green buildings and projects, Boehm walked workshop participants through his clever analogy of the home as a body.  His comparative analogy works like this: just like you can't achieve optimal health if one of your organ systems has a problem, you cannot have a high performing home if you have overlooked one of the key elements to your home.  Then, Boehm went one step further to describe how his practice is to not only aim for a healthy, well-designed home, but to incorporate the best green practices with the latest design considerations, showing off some of his own invented strategies for optimal energy conservation and indoor air quality.

You can see the parallels drawn out below: just as a body needs a strong skeleton as the foundation for protecting all internal systems, a healthy home starts with a strong frame. A building's envelope is synonymous to the skin, ventilation to respiration, heating and cooling to circulation, lighting to vision, and operation of a home synonymous to behavior.

And, if you want to know MORE on the topic, stay tuned.  We took video footage of the workshop that will be up in the next few weeks!  Thanks, Bill, for presenting such an enlightening topic!
