The three R's

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
You have heard it a million times. Protect the earth. Act responsibly. Walk the walk.

One thing to remember, though, is that before getting to the recycle phase, which can often be energy intensive in and of itself, Reducing and Reusing are even better approaches. Believe it our not one of the easiest places to do this is right in your own front yard...or maybe your neighbor's!

Be green this weekend: hit up some yard sales!

Keep items out of the waste stream...Don't go buy new stuff! Stroll down the street this Saturday and take a look to see if any of your neighbors might have what you need at their yard sales! This is also a great way to meet your other neighbors as they will probably be out shopping too.

Be green this week: have a yard sale!

We all know that we have one or two things hanging around that we don't really need or want. But as the saying goes, one man's trash in another man's treasure. By holding a yard sale, you will be reducing your own clutter and offering others the opportunity to reuse it in new and creative ways! And don't forget, if you can't sell it, you can always donate it!

If you do decide to throw a yard sale in the green spirit, here are a few tips we hope you find helpful!

- Make your signs out of cardboard boxes you might have normally recycled, but can now Reuse!
- Clean up your stuff, make it shiny and attractive to your shoppers with eco-friendly cleaning products (available at  'g' Green Design) or even with some vinegar and newspaper
- Use scrap paper and sticky tack to make your price tags and collect and reuse these materials upon sale

These great ideas and others can be viewed at: http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/eco-friendly-yard-sale.html.

Yard sales are also an excellent chance to team up with your friends and neighbors and do your part for the environment together. Ask others if they would like to join you in your efforts to reduce and reuse. Plus you all get to make a little green ($$$) while saving some green (nature) too! You may even want to pledge to use your proceeds towards greening your homes together! If that is the case, 'g' Green Design Center is your first stop for:

- Air purifiers
- Energy-efficient lighting fixtures
- Eco-friendly paints and sealants with ZERO VOCs
- Sustainably harvested wood flooring
- Recycled - BPA-free food containers
- Recycled paper and glass counter tops

and so much more!

You could also consider donating your profits to a green charity of choice. LOVE this! Reusing and recycling is so critical for us. Buying used is the only way to go. It's a different mindframe, but once we start frequenting yard sales, Goodwill and other thrift stores the more we'll realize that we can have anything we need secondhand, save money and not be contributing to more waste.

Thank you for this fantastic post!
